We left early Sunday morning as thick clouds gathered over the skies of New York. We had read about the Grand Canyon of the east and looked forward to visiting.
The Pennsylvania state welcome center was one of the most beautiful we have visited thus far and the host gave us an excellent introduction to the area. He suggested that we visit Leonard Harrison State Park, just 10 miles from Wellsboro, PA.
Even in the heavy rain and thick cloud cover the views of the gorge were beautiful. The clouds added a touch of mystery to the landscape that I loved.
As is often the case in these older state parks there was a strong influence of the work of the CCC. We enjoyed the stonework and commemorative plaques that celebrated this rich heritage.
Leaving Pennsylvania, our route took us west along the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania.
For reasons I don’t remember, we decided to get off the highway in the tiny town of Tidioute. Following the instructions of Garmin Girl, we thought we could travel through town.
What we didn’t know is that the road chose to follow just kept getting more and more narrow with no place anywhere to turn around.
Finally we found a place wide enough to pull over and unhook the Tracker and turn around.
On our way back through town, we somehow missed the left turn back to the bridge, and once again the roads began to narrow.
Once again we unhooked the Tracker to turn around in a small parking lot before finally making our way out of Tidioute Pennsylvania.
Ten years later as I attempt to write this post, this memory stands out for both of us as one of the worst routing mistakes we have ever made. I also have no clue whatsoever where we spent the night after our drive through Pennsylvania. Looking at the calendar yields no secrets, but it does appear that at least we stayed somewhere that gave us the chance to open up the awning and enjoy a bit of late day sunshine. Finally reviewing more photo captions and website campgrounds it appears that we settled in at the Mercer KOA campground in Ohio.
